Reddit Lost 86% of Its ChatGPT Citations in Four Days

Reddit’s ChatGPT citation share fell 86% in four days this August. What our own engine-level monitoring found, why it happened, and what to build instead.

We track Reddit’s presence in AI answers every week. In August it collapsed in one engine and climbed in another, and nothing Reddit did caused either move.

Reddit works as a GEO surface. You have to get your head around that idea first, because most arguments against it do not.

It earns real citations in AI answers, it earns them disproportionately on the questions closest to a purchase decision, and for most ecommerce categories it is already the one place where an unfiltered opinion about your product exists.

Unfortunately, you don’t own that position. You rent it, and the lease terms get set by two parties who have never heard of you.

In the second week of August 2026, Reddit’s share of ChatGPT Search citations fell from a 3.83% average to 0.52%, an 86.4% relative drop, according to daily tracking published by Promptwatch. Nothing changed on Reddit. No brand changed its approach. OpenAI adjusted how it builds the background searches behind an answer, and one of the most quoted domains on the internet stopped showing up in one engine.

That was the third reset in twelve months. It probably won’t be the last. Which means the question worth asking is not how to get cited on Reddit. It is what you build that survives the next reset.

Two lines running together then diverging sharply, showing Reddit citations falling in one AI engine while rising in another.

The August drop had nothing to do with Reddit

The explanation that circulated fastest was a change to ChatGPT’s query fan-out, the background searches the model runs while assembling a response. On August 8, fan-out queries using the site: operator jumped from 0.37% to 16.8% in a single day, and the average number of fan-out queries per response nearly doubled. Instead of searching broadly and taking what came back, ChatGPT started going to specific domains and asking them directly.

While that story is easy to tell, it doesn’t really survive the timeline. Search Engine Journal pointed out that the August 8 change produced only a modest slide, from the high 3% range into the mid 2s. The cliff came six days later, on August 14, and nothing published since explains it. Promptwatch itself has been careful here, saying the data shows when the shift happened rather than why, and asking readers to “treat the size of the drop as provisional while we keep monitoring.”

There is precedent for the measurement itself being the problem. Reddit’s ChatGPT visibility collapsed once before, in September 2025. One analyst tied that episode to Google removing the num=100 search parameter, which many data providers relied on to pull deep result sets. Not a decision by OpenAI. Not a decision by Reddit. A third party changed a URL parameter and the numbers moved.

Either way, the lesson lands in the same place. A position that can be erased by someone else’s infrastructure change was never a position you held.

Canopy Management’s own monitoring caught the same break

We track a fixed set of roughly 98 Amazon agency evaluation queries across AI engines every week. Reddit is the fourth most retrieved source domain in that set, and by citation count it outranks YouTube.

In the week of August 3, Reddit appeared in a normal share of ChatGPT responses to those queries. Two weeks later it had fallen to roughly 30% of its own summer baseline, a decline of about 70% against the June through early-August average. The slide begins in the week containing August 14, matching Promptwatch’s break on a completely different prompt set with a different denominator.

Google AI Overviews went the other way in exactly those weeks, rising to about 130% of its own baseline and holding there.

Reddit did not change. One engine stopped asking.

Weekly Reddit retrieval by AI engine, each indexed to its own June 1 to August 3 average (=100)

Reddit retrieval across two AI engines on a fixed set of roughly 98 Amazon agency evaluation queries, monitored weekly. Each engine indexed to its own June 1 to August 3 average. Source: our AI visibility monitoring, June to August 2026. Weekly samples are small; individual weeks are noisy.

Two honest caveats. The weekly samples are small, so individual weeks are noisy, and the August 17 figure rests on a handful of responses. And this is one prompt set in one category, not a claim about the whole web.

The shape is what matters. Reddit did not get worse. One engine stopped asking and another asked more. If your visibility plan depends on a source behaving consistently across engines, these findings reveal a possible problem.

Reddit is deleting the content marketers plant there

While vendors were selling Reddit placement as a GEO tactic, Reddit was building systems to remove it.

In July 2026 the company disclosed that its automated defenses block roughly 23 million spam views per day before anyone sees them, catch about 25,000 new spam posts and comments daily, and revoke close to 2 million inauthentic votes a day. Detection starts when an account is created. The stated target is coordinated inauthentic behavior and manufactured hype, the exact signature of a seeded thread campaign.

Reddit has an obvious reason to keep pushing. Advertising is the overwhelming majority of its revenue, and Q2 2026 came in at $805 million, up 61% year over year. Every brand getting placement through a persona account is a brand not buying an ad.

Operators in this space already feel it. One agency running Reddit visibility work told Bloomberg it had gotten posts cited by ChatGPT within a day of publishing, and that Reddit had removed some of those same posts.

You can win the citation and lose the post. Sometimes in the same week.

Your AI visibility plan should not depend on a platform that is actively removing your content.

The citation surface is a contract you are not party to

Reddit appears in AI answers because Reddit sold access. Its arrangements with Google and OpenAI have been reported at roughly $60 million and $70 million a year, and through 2026 the company has been pushing toward usage-based and dynamic pricing that scales with how central its data is to a generated answer.

Everything else follows from that. Reddit has restricted the Internet Archive from saving post pages, comments, and profiles, framing it as blocking AI companies from pulling archived content without paying. It sued Perplexity and three scraping firms in October 2025 over what it called industrial-scale data laundering, and it sued Anthropic earlier that year. On access, the company’s own position is plain: “We are selective about who we work with.”

Read that as a brand and the picture clarifies. Your Reddit citations exist inside a commercial negotiation between Reddit and each AI company. Whether they persist depends on renewal terms, pricing disputes, and litigation. None of those are things you influence, and none of them are visible to you until the numbers move.

The rule with “upvoting” written into it

Most Reddit GEO pitches skip the legal section. That is a choice worth noticing.

The FTC’s revised Endorsement Guides, finalized in June 2023 and codified at 16 CFR Part 255, added a principle covering “publishing, upvoting, downvoting, reporting, or editing consumer reviews” in ways that distort what consumers think of a product. Vote manipulation is named in the text.

The provision that should change how brands buy these services is the one on intermediaries. Section 255.1(f) extends liability to “review brokers, reputation management companies, and other similar intermediaries.” An agency can be held responsible alongside the brand it works for, either for deceptive endorsements or for hiring endorsers who fail to disclose a material connection.

A vendor offering undisclosed persona posting is proposing something that breaches Reddit’s policy, exposes you to the FTC, and exposes the vendor too. That is not a service. That is shared liability with a markup.

What holds up

Three things survive every reset described above.

Treat Reddit as an instrument, not a channel. Threads about your category are a live feed of the objections, misconceptions, and trade-offs your product pages fail to address. That intelligence does not expire when an engine changes its retrieval logic. The citation does.

Build the answer where you control it. Community sources lose to official documentation on structured how-to content, reference facts, and anything with a verifiable right answer. That is winnable ground and it sits on your domain. The brands taking citation share back are the ones covering the downsides, naming the friction, and answering the question before a stranger does it for them.

Diversify by engine, not by tactic. The same weeks that gutted Reddit in ChatGPT strengthened it in AI Overviews. Any plan built on one engine’s behavior is one product decision from irrelevance.

Reddit will keep earning citations, and for opinion-shaped questions it will often be the only source an engine bothers with. Show up there like a practitioner, under a real identity, because it is a reasonable place to be useful. Just do not build the plan on it.

The position is rented. Build something you own.

Frequently Asked Questions

Did ChatGPT stop citing Reddit entirely?

No. Reddit’s share of ChatGPT Search citations dropped to about 0.5% in mid-August, down from 3.83%, but it did not reach zero and tracking since then shows it partially recovering. The tracking vendor has called the size of the drop provisional and has not ruled out a collection issue on its own end. Check your own citation data before making decisions on a single published average.

Is Reddit still worth posting on for AI visibility?

For opinion-driven and comparison queries, Reddit remains one of the sources engines reach for when no better answer exists. The problem is durability rather than value. Treat it as one input among several and never as the foundation, since the position can be removed by a platform decision you have no visibility into.

What kinds of questions does Reddit not win?

Structured how-to content, reference facts, official specifications, and anything with a single verifiable answer. Engines reach for documentation and authoritative sources on those, which is why they are the most winnable ground for brand-owned content.

Can an agency get in legal trouble for Reddit marketing?

Yes. The FTC’s Endorsement Guides extend liability to intermediaries including review brokers and reputation management companies, so an agency can be held responsible alongside the brand it works for. Undisclosed persona posting and vote manipulation are both addressed in the current text. Ask any vendor how they handle disclosure before signing.

Why do published Reddit citation numbers disagree so much?

Because they measure different things. Share of all citations, share of the top ten cited sources, and share of responses containing at least one citation produce wildly different figures from the same behavior. A study reporting Reddit at 46.7% and one reporting 1.8% can both be accurate.

How would I know if this affected my brand?

Track citation share by engine on your own priority queries rather than relying on published averages. Category and query type change the picture substantially, and an industry-wide figure will not tell you whether the sources feeding answers about your brand moved.
